revDSG and EU AI Act — what they are really about, in plain terms
Behind the unwieldy names are two simple ideas: people's data should be protected, and AI should be used in a way that can be trusted. What does the revDSG want?
The revised Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (revDSG/nFADP, in force since September 2023) has a single goal: protecting people's data — your customers', your employees', your job applicants'. It applies to every company in Switzerland, regardless of size or industry, because practically every company works with personal data: addresses, contracts, payslips, emails.
- Know which personal data you hold and what it is used for — and be able to stand by it when someone asks.
- Protect data appropriately: who has access, where it flows, which tools are in use — AI tools included.
- Inform employees so they can make the right call in everyday situations — for example, not entering customer data into open AI tools.

The basic idea is simple: whoever holds people's data handles it with care — knowing which data is used for what, protecting it appropriately and not passing it on thoughtlessly. This is exactly where AI comes in: anyone who enters personal data into an open AI tool gives it away.
What does the EU AI Act want?
The EU AI Act is the European Union's AI law (entering into force in stages since 2024). Its goal: AI should be used — but safely, transparently and by people who understand what they are operating.
- If your company has customers or partners in the EU, or AI output is used there, parts of the regulation may affect you too.
- Employees who work with AI tools should have a basic understanding of what these tools can do — and what they can't.
- Record who was trained, when and in what: structured documentation is the simplest way to demonstrate this diligence.
